5. Boeing Super Hornet
Currently in service with Royal Australian Air Force and the US Air Force the Boeing Super Hornet is a relatively new aircraft that can carry quite the arsenal of weapons. Each one is equipped with an internal 20 mm rotary cannon with both air and surface to air missiles. This real image of an F-18 was was taking in downtown Detroit, flying a little too close for the comfort of local residents, setting off car alarms in the process. This was first ordered by the US Navy in 1992, and were thoroughly tested until 1995 to ensure it was up to their standards. It passed with flying colors and recently its be equipped with top of the line infrared search and tracking sensors as well as a modified fuel tank for longer ranges. The AIM-9x sidewinder missiles are undetectable with enemy radar, making this a smooth fighter to have on our team.
4. Chengdu J-20
China also has some pretty good fighter jets up their sleeve as well, especially with the J-20. This is China’s new fighter, that has similarities to Russian and American designs. Low production of this fighter began in 2015 due to its high price and were eventually given to the Chinese Air Force for active duty. Due to China’s secrecy with their military program, there’s not a ton of specific information on this aircraft. It’s known that it does have a fairly large fuel tank. Other sources claim that China still doesn’t possess the technology for complete stealth from showing up on enemy radar and no one really knows for sure what engine is under the hood. But it’s believed that Russia might have helped in assisting China get ahold of stealth fighter technology.
3. Eurofighter Typhoon
One of Nato’s go to defense fighter planes, this small, lightweight aircraft was developed in 1986 by numerous European countries. It features ground attack capabilities, laser and radar warning elements, and gives radar decoys to enemy radar systems. The costs of mass producing this fighter was split between Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK in 1988 while others were exported to Saudi Arabia. France was initially in on the deal but due to disputes on the design they decided to go with the Dassault Rafale, previously mentioned. It reaches a max speed of 1320 miles an hour and uses the Paveway III laser guided bombs to take out land targets. The highly agile machine consists of carbon fiber materials with a lifespan of about 6000 flying hours. Here you see the cockpit, designed for one pilot and is controlled with the centre stick.
2. Lockheed Martin F-35
Also known as the Lightning 2, this aircraft is currently in use by the United States Marine Corps but the US is planning on exporting to many other countries in the near future. It was designed with the intent to some day replace the F-16 fighters that are most commonly deployed. This is slightly smaller than the Lockheed and Martin F-22 design and only has 1 engine. It might get called upon to do close air support, air defense missions and even tactical bombing. It utilizes stealth technology to stay off enemy radar and is prized for the short amount of space needed to land and take off. This makes it ideal to eventually be stationed on Aircraft Carriers some day in the future.
1. The F-22 Raptor
This US fighter get almost has complete stealth against enemy radar and carries a vicious arsenal of weapons on board. It’s possibly the most advanced and expensive fighter aircraft on the planet to this day. Much of the equipment is classified but the engines allow it to cruise extremely long ranges and is extraordinary maneuverable. Air superiority was the number one goal when designing this fighting machine. Many claim that it’s completely unmatched on many different categories of other fighters. Some of these have been recently moved into places like Estonia and in Germany in order to help keep Nato territory secure. They recently have seen combat time in Syria, intercept two of their fighter jets above the city of Hasakah. Apparently the fighter has radar absorbing metallic skin which requires quite a bit of maintenance. There have been a few reported crashes like the one you see here but the pilot ejected safely and it seems as though it might almost be a challenge to maintain this complex fighter.
